First Steps

Participants in our 'Introduction to Database Design' workshop at CoLang 2024 are asked to complete these steps before beginning our workshop:

Before the start of Day 1

• Make sure you have a spreadsheet containing language materials. Best suited to this workshop are materials like word list, phrase book, or dictionary type information. Please be sure that you have proper permission to use and share this information with others in this workshop, and with your facilitators!

• Bring at least one laptop per team. You will need to be able to log into that laptop and use wifi to connect to the web;

• Download and install DB Browser for SQLite on the laptop you plan to use.

• Join our CoLang classroom to access review activities designed to help reinforce your understanding of the content covered in each lesson.

Tip

If you have trouble installing DB Browser for SQLite you may need to ask a system admin for help!

• Identify a small but powerful first database project you'd like to work on that uses the material you have. Ideas might include:

  • a mini dictionary
  • a specialized word or morpheme list
  • a phrasebook

• Generate courage and curiosity for the workshop to come!
