Introduction to Database Design Workshop, developed for the O’odham Piipaash Language Program of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community by the Advancing Indigenous Language Technologies project.
Welcome!¶
Amy did it!¶
This is a one day introduction to the world of databases and database development. This topic is very nerdy! We'll be using computers the way that software engineers and other technical people do. 🤓
Before We Begin¶
-
we will want to work from a spreadsheet containing dictionary type information. Your spreadsheet could be stored in MS Excel or as a Google sheet.
-
we will be asking you to use one laptop per individual or team. It can be a Mac or Windows machine. You will need to be able to log into that laptop and use wifi to connect to the web;
-
please make sure to install DB Browser for SQLite on the laptop you plan to use.
Your Facilitators¶
This workshop is facilitated by:
John Ivens. John is a retired software engineer who has built database applications for educational administration and also for (we're not kidding) NASA space missions including the hugely successful Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and its moons. John is also the technical lead for the Coeur d'Alene Online Language Resource Center.
Gus Hahn-Powell. Gus is a computational linguist at the University of Arizona where he has built a variety of language-related technologies, and is the director of the online MS in Human Language Technology.
Amy Fountain. Amy is a linguist at the University of Arizona and a hobbyist web developer who also contributes to the Coeur d'Alene Online Language Resource Center.
We are all founding members of the Advancing Indigenous Language Technologies project.
